The 38-year-old defender, who recently joined River Plate, confirmed his decision in a video shared on Instagram.

"I dreamed from a very young age of wearing the Argentina shirt. It was the greatest privilege football gave me," Otamendi said.

Otamendi reflects on the World Cup Final

In his farewell message, Otamendi spoke about the loss to Spain, which became the final match of his international career.

"Fate wanted my last match to be a World Cup Final. It wasn't the result we wanted, but I leave with my head held high because this group fought until the very last second. I leave knowing I gave everything," he said.

The veteran center-back also thanked Argentina's supporters for their unconditional support throughout his journey.

"You made us feel that every time the national anthem played, we weren't just eleven players, but millions defending the same dream."

A message for Argentina's future

Otamendi also expressed gratitude to his family and shared a message for the players who will wear the national team shirt in the future.

"Never stop believing. There will be setbacks that seem impossible to overcome, but this shirt always rewards those who defend it with humility, sacrifice and love. Keep your heads up, keep fighting and never let a defeat steal your dreams."

He closed his farewell with one final reflection:

"Titles remain in history, but the love for these colors lasts forever."

Otamendi's Argentina legacy

Although he had previously stated that the 2026 World Cup would be his final tournament with Argentina, his official retirement came just days after the World Cup Final.

Otamendi made 139 appearances for Argentina, including 21 World Cup matches, and scored eight goals.

He represented his country at the 2010, 2018, 2022, and 2026 FIFA World Cups, winning the title in Qatar before finishing as runner-up in 2026.

He also helped Argentina win the 2022 Finalissima and played in the 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024 Copa América tournaments.
