David Alaba, With Limited Role at Real Madrid, Will Captain Austria at the World Cup
David Alaba will captain Austria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup™, in a Ralf Rangnick squad that blends experience and young talent to compete in Group J against Argentina, Algeria and Jordan.
David Alaba will captain Austria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup™, despite his limited playing time at Real Madrid this season. Head coach Ralf Rangnick confirmed this Monday the final 26-man squad that will compete in the tournament in North America, where Austria has been drawn into Group J alongside Argentina, Algeria and Jordan.
At 33 years old, the Real Madrid defender has been confirmed as the national team leader, reinforcing his importance within a squad that combines experienced players with emerging young talents. His selection had been questioned at times due to his lack of prominence at club level, but his international stature ultimately weighed heavily in the coaching staff’s decision.
Austria arrives at the World Cup with a competitive squad featuring players spread across some of Europe’s top leagues. Key names include Marcel Sabitzer of Borussia Dortmund and Konrad Laimer of Bayern Munich, both central figures in midfield. David Affengruber, a defender for Elche in LaLiga, also stands out as one of the squad’s surprises.
The Austrian team is also betting on young talent. Players such as Carney Chukwuemeka and Paul Wanner, both with dual nationality, have committed their international future to Austria, bringing freshness and potential to the squad. Chukwuemeka’s case is particularly notable, as he previously represented England at youth level before choosing to play for his country of birth. Another key figure is Marko Arnautovic, Austria’s all-time top scorer, who is expected to play what will likely be his final World Cup, providing experience and leadership in attack.
Austria will begin its campaign on June 17 against Jordan. They will then face Argentina in their toughest group match, led by Lionel Messi, before closing the group stage on June 28 against Algeria.
Under Ralf Rangnick, the team will look to cause an upset in a difficult group, relying on tactical discipline, high intensity, and the leadership of David Alaba as captain in another World Cup appearance.
