Concerns Over James Rodríguez’s Form
The World Cup is fast approaching, and Colombia is working to build a team capable of competing at the highest level. To achieve that, it needs its key players to be in top shape. While Luis Díaz is enjoying a great moment in Europe, fans’ main concern is focused on James Rodríguez.
The midfielder, captain, and leader of the Colombian national team recently returned to action with Minnesota United in the US Open Cup. However, his performance raised doubts. Although his team advanced on penalties against Sacramento—a second-division side—James Rodríguez failed to make an impact and looked short of match fitness.
While he showed accuracy in distribution, he did not create danger: he registered no key passes, and his influence in the final third was limited. This quickly sparked criticism on social media, where many fans voiced their concerns with comments like “he’s far from his best level” and even “he’s finished.”
Physical Context and Lack of Continuity
The context, however, is important. James Rodríguez is coming off a severe dehydration episode that left him hospitalized for several days following friendlies against Croatia and France, where he had even started. His return has been gradual, and he has yet to find consistency.
So far, he has played only three matches for Minnesota United out of eight this season. In those games, he has been used as an attacking midfielder, trying to operate between the lines and connect with the forwards, but the lack of chemistry with his teammates is evident.
Even so, his distribution numbers are not poor: he averages close to 87% passing accuracy. The issue is not precision, but impact. His involvement has yet to translate into dangerous plays, largely due to a lack of competitive rhythm and collective understanding.

Uncertainty Ahead of the World Cup
Physically, there are also clear signs. At 34 years old and after a recent medical episode, James Rodríguez is still far from his best version. He looks heavy in his movements and lacks the explosiveness needed to make a difference in the final third.
Despite everything, his quality remains unquestionable. With rhythm and confidence, he can be a decisive player for Colombia, especially as a link to elevate players like Luis Díaz, Jhon Arias, or the attacking line.
Fans’ concern is understandable: time is running out before the World Cup, and their captain is not in top form. However, it is also true that James Rodríguez needs continuity more than premature judgment.
The upcoming matches with Minnesota United and the final FIFA international window will be key to assessing his true level. That is where it will be decided whether he is ready to lead Colombia—or whether the debate over his place in the World Cup will continue to grow.
