Brazil’s squad announcement for the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to generate debate, especially because of several notable omissions. One of the most discussed absences was Joao Pedro, the Chelsea forward who is enjoying the best season of his career but was left out of Carlo Ancelotti’s final roster.

The Italian coach surprised many by openly admitting that the striker probably deserved to be included among the 26 selected players, even apologizing publicly for not naming him in the squad that will compete in the World Cup across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

After officially unveiling the “Seleção” squad, Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged that several players would understandably feel disappointed with the final list and specifically pointed to Joao Pedro’s case as one of the toughest decisions.

The coach explained that the Chelsea striker had done enough to earn consideration, but ultimately chose to rely on players with greater international experience for such a demanding tournament.

Ancelotti’s comments immediately sparked discussion in both Brazil and England, particularly because the forward had established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout attacking players this season.

The absence of Joao Pedro adds to other controversial decisions within the squad, which also includes unexpected returns and key injury absences.

Joao Pedro Shined With Chelsea Despite Missing Out

The story gained even more attention because only hours after learning he would miss the World Cup, Chelsea announced that Joao Pedro had been voted the club’s Player of the Season.

The Brazilian received more than 60 percent of the fan vote, finishing ahead of stars such as Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo.

The striker, who joined from Brighton in a deal worth around £60 million, delivered a spectacular campaign. In the Premier League alone, he recorded 15 goals and five assists, while across all competitions he contributed directly to 25 goals.

Thanks to those numbers, Joao Pedro became only the sixth player in Chelsea’s history to reach at least 20 goal contributions during his debut Premier League season with the club, joining legendary names such as Eden Hazard and Diego Costa.

Now, after being left out of the World Cup, the Brazilian forward will focus entirely on finishing the season strongly with the London side.
