Canada's Predicted Lineup to Face South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Canada is about to play the most important match in its recent history. For the first time, the Canadians will compete in a knockout-stage match at a FIFA World Cup, a milestone that South Africa will also experience, making this a historic occasion for both nations.
Although Canada is one of the host countries of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, it will not enjoy the advantage of playing at home. After finishing second in its group, the team coached by Jesse Marsch will travel to Los Angeles, where it will look to build on the excellent form it displayed during the group stage and advance to the Round of 16 for the first time.
However, the outlook is not entirely favorable. The Canadians will be without Ismaël Koné, who suffered a serious injury in the final group-stage match. His absence is a significant blow to the midfield, as he had become one of the team's most important players thanks to his ability to recover possession, break defensive lines, and provide balance.
Canada's Predicted Lineup
Formation: 4-4-2
16 Maxime Crépeau
2 Alistair Johnston
4 Luc de Fougerolles
13 Derek Cornelius
22 Richie Laryea
17 Tajon Buchanan
25 Nathan Saliba
6 Mathieu Choinière
20 Ali Ahmed
10 Jonathan David (c)
9 Cyle Larin
Canada Analysis
Canada is expected to stick with the 4-4-2 formation that helped it successfully navigate the group stage with an intense, high-tempo, and vertical style of play. Jesse Marsch's side relies heavily on high pressing, immediate ball recovery after losing possession, and quick attacking transitions, an approach that has troubled every opponent it has faced in the tournament.
The absence of Ismaël Koné will force adjustments in midfield. Nathan Saliba and Mathieu Choinière will be tasked with providing balance, winning back possession, and quickly connecting with the attacking players. Out wide, Tajon Buchanan and Ali Ahmed will look to use their pace to stretch the defense and create one-on-one opportunities.

Up front, the partnership of Jonathan David and Cyle Larin remains Canada's biggest attacking threat. While David offers movement, creativity, and clinical finishing inside the penalty area, Larin provides physicality and aerial dominance, a combination that has become one of the team's greatest strengths.
The biggest challenge for Canada will be maintaining its intensity throughout the full 90 minutes while avoiding giving space to a South African side that has proven dangerous on the counterattack. If the Canadians can impose their pressing game, control midfield, and maintain the efficiency they showed during the group stage, Jesse Marsch's team will have a genuine opportunity to secure a historic place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
