The Canada national team confirmed on Friday, June 19, the severity of the injury suffered by midfielder Ismael Kone, who was forced off during Canada’s historic first-ever World Cup victory.

According to an official statement from the Canadian national team, the 24-year-old midfielder will miss the FIFA World Cup 2026 after undergoing surgery on a lower-limb injury immediately following his setback.
"Last night, Ismaël Koné underwent successful surgery to repair a lower limb fracture. He is expected to make a full recovery but will miss the remainder of FIFA World Cup 2026. You will come back stronger, Isma! 🫶"

According to Canadian media reports and Italian transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the Sassuolo midfielder suffered fractures to both the tibia and fibula, an injury that could keep him sidelined for four to five months.
Meanwhile, teammate Moise Bombito shared a photo with Kone on his Instagram Stories after the midfielder underwent surgery on Thursday night.
Despite the setback, Canada sits atop Group B with four points after drawing 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina and defeating Qatar 6-0. The Canadians will look to hold on to first place when they face Switzerland on June 24 in Vancouver, with both teams currently level on points.
