Canada secured the first World Cup point in its history after battling to a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina at Toronto Stadium in its opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Competing in just its third World Cup appearance, the host nation ended a six-match losing streak on football’s biggest stage and finally earned a place in the tournament record books.

A HISTORIC MOMENT WITH MIXED EMOTIONS

Substitute Cyle Larin proved to be the hero for the hosts, scoring in the 78th minute just two minutes after coming off the bench. His equalizer rescued a valuable point and prevented another World Cup defeat for the Maple Leafs.

Under the guidance of American head coach Jesse Marsch, Canada celebrated a long-awaited milestone after leaving both Mexico 1986 and Qatar 2022 without a single point.

Despite the historic achievement, the result leaves Canada with work to do in Group B. The hosts will now turn their attention to their next match against Qatar in Vancouver on June 18, where they will seek the first World Cup victory in the nation’s history.

A LOOK BACK AT CANADA’S PREVIOUS WORLD CUP CAMPAIGNS

Canada’s first World Cup appearance came in 1986, when it finished bottom of Group C and last overall in the tournament held in Mexico. The Canadians suffered a 1-0 defeat to France in León before falling 2-0 to Hungary and 2-0 to the Soviet Union in Irapuato.

Thirty-six years later, Canada returned to the World Cup in Qatar with high expectations but endured another disappointing campaign. The team finished at the bottom of Group F after losses to Belgium (2-0), Croatia (4-1), and Morocco (2-1).

Now, with a historic first point finally secured, Canada will hope this breakthrough serves as the foundation for a stronger run on home soil and a chance to deliver a memorable tournament in front of its own fans.
