Brazil Thrash Scotland to Finish Top of Group C at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Neymar Returns
Carlo Ancelotti’s side delivered when it mattered most, overcoming earlier challenges to finish atop the group. Brazil will now await the runner-up from Group F in the knockout stage.
Brazil enjoyed a memorable night in Miami on Wednesday, defeating Scotland 3-0 to secure first place in Group C at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The victory was made even sweeter by the return of Neymar, the nation’s all-time leading scorer and one of its greatest icons.
VINICIUS DELIVERS, BRUNO SHINES AND NEYMAR RETURNS
Powered by a brace from Vinicius Junior and an outstanding display from Bruno Guimaraes, Brazil were comfortably the better side against a Scotland team that, despite its defensive lapses, still harbors hopes of reaching the knockout rounds as one of the tournament’s best third-placed finishers.
Vinicius opened the scoring in the seventh minute after being set up by Rayan, who stepped in for the injured Raphinha. The Bournemouth winger, making a surprise start, capitalized on a mistake by veteran defender Scott McKenna before slipping the ball to Vinicius, who continued his remarkable form by scoring in all three group-stage matches.
The Real Madrid star thought he had doubled the lead in the 22nd minute after pouncing on another Scottish error, this time from Jack Hendry. However, after a VAR review, Mexican referee Cesar Arturo Ramos Palazuelos ruled out the goal for a foul in the buildup.
Vinícius would not be denied for long. Deep into first-half stoppage time (45+3'), he headed home at the far post from a superb cross by Bruno Guimaraes, the quiet conductor behind Brazil’s attacking dominance.
Although Scotland's "Tartan Army" showed more attacking intent after the break, Brazil remained in control. Yet the biggest moment of the evening came in the 76th minute, when Neymar finally returned to international action 981 days after the devastating injury he suffered against Uruguay on October 17, 2023, at Montevideo’s Centenario Stadium.
The Brazilian superstar replaced Matheus Cunha, who had already put the result beyond doubt with Brazil’s third goal in the 60th minute. Cunha finished off a composed move orchestrated by Bruno Guimaraes, blasting home with his right foot after a perfectly weighted pass.
Neymar’s impact on the field was modest, but his presence alone transformed the atmosphere. From the moment cameras showed him on the bench to his entrance onto the pitch, he was greeted like a hero, with thunderous applause and chants from the crowd.
GOAL DIFFERENCE AND HAITI HELP BRAZIL
Carlo Ancelotti and Brazil ultimately achieved their objective, topping the group with seven points despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco and facing criticism for not winning by a larger margin against Haiti.
Level on points with Morocco and unable to separate themselves through their head-to-head meeting, Brazil needed goal difference to finish first—and, indirectly, Haiti played a key role.
The Seleção’s 3-0 victories over both Haiti and Scotland left them with a +6 goal differential, while the Atlas Lions finished with +3 after beating Haiti 4-2 and edging Scotland by a single goal.
That second tiebreaker was enough for the five-time world champions to overtake the surprise package of the previous World Cup, despite Morocco coming close to defeating them earlier in the tournament.
As Group C winners, Brazil will face the runner-up from Group F on June 29 at Houston Stadium. Morocco, meanwhile, will travel to Monterrey to take on the Group F winner later that day.
Scotland, with three points, remain in the hunt for a place among the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams. As things stand, they are projected to face co-host Mexico at Azteca Stadium should they advance to the knockout stage. Which opponent ultimately awaits them remains to be seen.
