Brazil and Carlo Ancelotti Suffer Another Major Blow Ahead of the World Cup
Brazil has suffered another major setback ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Wesley's injury forces Carlo Ancelotti to reshuffle his plans and adds a new concern for the Seleção before its opening match against Morocco.
The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has not been smooth for Brazil. Just when Carlo Ancelotti appeared to be settling on the ideal lineup to challenge for a sixth world title, another injury has struck the South American giants. Right-back Wesley, who had emerged as one of the leading options on the defensive flank, has officially been ruled out of the tournament.
The setback was confirmed after the defender suffered a left adductor muscle injury during Brazil's 2-1 friendly victory over Egypt. Medical examinations later revealed that he would not recover in time to participate in the World Cup.
A Key Absence Forces Ancelotti to Adjust
The news represents a significant challenge for Ancelotti, who had placed considerable trust in the AS Roma defender to occupy a crucial role in his tactical setup.
The 23-year-old was forced off after just 15 minutes in Cleveland, and television images showed his frustration as he left the field. He was later seen on the sidelines visibly emotional while awaiting the results of medical tests.
Before the final diagnosis was confirmed, the Italian coach publicly expressed concern about the player's condition. However, any hope of a quick recovery disappeared when the Brazilian Football Confederation officially announced that the injury would keep him out of the competition.
As a result, Atalanta midfielder Ederson has been called up to replace him on the World Cup roster.
Brazil Remains Focused Despite Growing Challenges
While losing Wesley is a significant blow due to his pace, physical strength, and tactical growth since moving to Italy, the coaching staff is already working on alternative solutions ahead of the opening match against Morocco.
Players such as Danilo and Ibáñez are expected to be considered as options on the right side of defense, while the addition of Ederson provides extra depth in midfield, though he offers a very different skill set.
There are still positives for the Seleção. The team enters the tournament with confidence following its win over Egypt, secured by goals from Bruno Guimarães and Endrick. In fact, Ancelotti recently stated that he already has a clear idea of the starting lineup he plans to use in Brazil's World Cup opener.
However, the veteran coach also warned that mistakes become far more costly once the tournament begins. Now, in addition to fine-tuning his squad on the field, he must find a solution to a defense that has lost one of its most important pieces just days before football's biggest stage gets underway.
