Argentina to Be Investigated by FIFA Following Post-Semifinal Celebrations Against England at the World Cup
FIFA will open an investigation into the Argentine Football Association (AFA) after players displayed a banner reading "The Falkland Islands Are Argentine" following the World Cup semifinal against England. A financial penalty is considered the most likely outcome.
FIFA to Open Investigation Into AFA Following the Semifinal Against England
FIFA is set to launch a formal investigation into the Argentine Football Association (AFA) over events that took place after the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal between Argentina and England in Atlanta. The governing body is expected to begin disciplinary proceedings once it receives the official reports submitted by the match officials.
According to reports from several media outlets such as Mundo Deportivo, the investigation stems from the display of a banner reading "The Falkland Islands Are Argentine" during Argentina's post-match celebrations after securing a place in the World Cup final.
Among the players seen with the banner were Cristian "Cuti" Romero and Giovanni Lo Celso, although several other members of the squad also took part in the celebration on the pitch.
FIFA Regulations Prohibit Political Messages During Official Matches
The case will be evaluated under the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which states that competitions organized by FIFA must remain free from political demonstrations and other non-sporting expressions.
The regulations identify several types of misconduct, including violations of basic standards of conduct, offensive language or gestures, and the use of a sporting event to promote messages unrelated to football.
Under these rules, displaying a political banner during an official FIFA competition may lead to disciplinary proceedings regardless of the sporting outcome or the circumstances surrounding the celebration.
A Financial Fine Appears to Be the Most Likely Outcome
Although FIFA's disciplinary regulations provide for different types of sanctions, current reports indicate that the most likely outcome is a financial fine imposed on the Argentine Football Association, rather than sporting sanctions against the players involved.
The regulations also allow for disciplinary measures such as match suspensions, but reports published so far suggest that this scenario is considered unlikely in this case.
The disciplinary process will officially begin once FIFA notifies the Argentine federation, opening a period during which the association will be able to submit its response and any supporting arguments regarding the incident in Atlanta.
A Similar Incident Took Place in 2014
One aspect drawing attention is the existence of a previous case involving almost identical circumstances.
According to reports from multiple media outlets, after an international friendly between Argentina and Slovenia in 2014, Argentina players also displayed a banner bearing the message "The Falkland Islands Are Argentine."
That disciplinary case ultimately resulted in a fine of approximately $38,000, without any player suspensions.
