Argentina's Predicted Lineup to Face Cape Verde at the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Argentina begins the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against surprise package Cape Verde. With Lionel Messi returning to the starting lineup, Lionel Scaloni is still weighing three key decisions before naming his XI.
Argentina enters the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with confidence after finishing atop Group J with a perfect record. Now, Lionel Scaloni's side turns its attention to an unexpected opponent in Cape Verde, one of the tournament's biggest surprises after advancing as the runner-up from Group H.
While much of the starting lineup appears set, the Argentine manager is still evaluating several positions before confirming the team that will take the field in Miami. Fitness concerns and tactical decisions have left three starting spots open as the defending world champions prepare for their first knockout challenge.
Scaloni Faces Three Key Selection Decisions
The biggest question remains in central defense. Cristian Romero is expected to return after recovering from the knee injury that forced him out of Argentina's final group-stage match. However, if Scaloni decides not to risk him, veteran Nicolás Otamendi is ready to step into the starting lineup alongside Lisandro Martínez.
At left back, Nicolás Tagliafico has recovered from the injury that sidelined him earlier in the tournament and is pushing to reclaim his place. Should he not be fully fit, Facundo Medina is expected to continue after delivering solid performances in his absence.
The final dilemma comes in attack. With Lionel Messi returning after being rested against Jordan, Scaloni must choose between Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez to partner the captain. Lautaro boosted his chances by scoring in the last group-stage match, while Álvarez remains a trusted option despite a quieter performance.
Messi Set to Lead Argentina Once Again
Barring any last-minute changes, Emiliano Martínez will start in goal behind a back four of Nahuel Molina, Cristian Romero (or Nicolás Otamendi), Lisandro Martínez, and Nicolás Tagliafico (or Facundo Medina).
The midfield is expected to feature Rodrigo De Paul, Enzo Fernández, and Alexis Mac Allister, with Thiago Almada providing creativity behind the attacking duo.
Up front, all eyes will once again be on Lionel Messi, who returns to the starting XI after receiving a rest in the previous match. The Argentine captain will look to guide his team into the Round of 16 as Argentina aims to continue its quest to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup title against a determined Cape Verde side eager to extend its historic run.
