(VIDEO) All goals from Portugal vs Nigeria International Friendly to the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Relive the goals and best moments from Portugal’s final friendly match ahead of their debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Portugal national football team defeated Nigeria national football team 2–1 on Wednesday at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, in their final friendly match before making their debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
THE RELENTLESS STRIKER AND PORTUGAL’S OPENING GOAL
Cristiano Ronaldo, once again named in the starting XI, was eager to get on the scoresheet. However, it has been a frustrating afternoon in Leiria for the Portuguese legend.
The match proved difficult for him early on, as he squandered a clear opportunity in front of the Nigerian goalkeeper in the 8th minute. He also found himself caught offside twice, and later missed another chance during the first half.
Despite his constant involvement and intent in attack, the final touch has not been there so far, as Nigeria’s defensive line has managed to keep him quiet at key moments.
Pedro Neto broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute with a lethal left-footed strike, finishing off a well-placed assist from Diogo Dalot.
The changes introduced by Roberto Martínez compared to the starting lineup used against Chile paid off, with Portugal’s adjustments proving decisive in opening up the game.
DEFENSIVE CONCERNS
Akor Adams brought the match level in the 27th minute after catching the Portuguese back line badly positioned, exposing a defensive lapse that raises concerns ahead of the World Cup.
The equaliser highlighted moments of disorganisation at the back for Portugal national football team, a warning sign as preparations continue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
OTHER HERO, BUT NO CRISTIANO RONALDO
Francisco Conceicao, who came on at halftime, ended up securing the win for the side managed by Roberto Martínez with a stunning goal in the 75th minute.
In the end, Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to get on the scoresheet, enduring a frustrating night in which he also missed several chances during his 65 minutes on the pitch.
