Memo Ochoa holds records unmatched by any other player in the world
A career built on milestones
Football has produced legends across the globe, and in Mexico, when talking about legacy, Guillermo Ochoa sits at the top of the list for many. Some consider him the greatest goalkeeper in the country’s history, above Jorge Campos. The debate will continue for years, but what Ochoa has achieved in his career deserves a standing ovation.
Six World Cups and global recognition
He carried Mexico across six World Cups and belongs to a very exclusive group of players that includes Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and the Mexican goalkeeper himself, as the only footballers in history to appear in six different World Cups.

His career goes beyond national admiration. Ochoa is recognized worldwide as one of the most consistent goalkeepers of his generation. He also enters the list of players featured in the 2026 World Cup era who have won an Olympic medal, taking bronze at Tokyo 2020.
From Mexico to the Ballon d’or conversation
Ochoa is also part of Ballon d’Or history. He became the first Mexican player ever recognized in the award’s early stages thanks to his performances with Club América, especially in international tournaments like the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. Later, names such as Rafael Márquez, Javier Hernández, Andrés Guardado, and Giovani dos Santos also joined that list.
With Mexico, he became the most decorated player in terms of trophies, winning four Gold Cups in 2009, 2011, 2015, and 2019. Alongside Claudio Suárez and Ramón Ramírez, he stands as one of the most successful players in national team history. He also broke barriers as the first Mexican goalkeeper to move to Europe.
Titles, Europe, World Cups and a final goodbye
In 2011, he left Club América to join Ajaccio in Ligue 1, becoming the first Mexican goalkeeper to play abroad. Later, he added another milestone by winning the Belgian Cup with Standard Liège in 2018, defeating Genk in the final by a narrow margin.
On the biggest stage, Ochoa delivered standout performances. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he fought to be among the best goalkeepers of the tournament and finished with the silver glove recognition.
His career has been full of firsts, and his final appearance with Mexico came in the group stage against Czechia. That match marked his farewell, followed by a tribute from fans who celebrated everything he had achieved and what he represents for the national team. The nation responded with emotion, reflected in massive celebrations in Mexico City with nearly 800,000 people taking to the streets. That is how football is lived in the host country.
