THIS IS HOW CHILE WILL EMERGE
As preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup continue, Portugal will take on Chile this Saturday in Lisbon in a friendly match designed to fine-tune Roberto Martínez’s squad ahead of the tournament.
THE STAGE
The match will be played at the Estadio Nacional do Jamor in Lisbon, where Portugal is expected to use the occasion to evaluate his options as the World Cup approaches.
The reigning UEFA Nations League champions are unbeaten in their last three outings. Portugal followed a dominant qualifying victory over Armenia with a scoreless draw against Mexico in the reopening of the iconic Estadio Azteca before defeating the United States 2-0 in their most recent match.
Chile, meanwhile, arrives after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to New Zealand. La Roja was selected as Portugal’s opponent due to the similarities with Uruguay, whom the Portuguese will face in Group K at the World Cup. On paper, the South Americans appear to be favorable opposition for one of the tournament favorites.
TEAM NEWS
Portugal will be without midfielders Vitinha and Joao Neves, who have been rested after their demanding campaign with Paris Saint-Germain, capped by victory in the UEFA Champions League final.
With no injuries reported, stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes will be in action. The Chilean side will give playing time to Gonzalo Tapia and Felipe Loyola.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR PORTUGAL?
Following Saturday’s encounter, Portugal will face Nigeria in another friendly next Wednesday before traveling to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Portugal will then open its Group K campaign against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia on June 17, 23 and 27, respectively, as the first phase of the tournament gets underway.
