The Impressive Record Real Madrid Is Chasing at the Club World Cup
Los Blancos are approaching a historic milestone for most games played in a single season.
Real Madrid continues to make its mark during the 2024–25 season—not only through competitive success but also thanks to the team’s physical endurance and consistency. With their recent 1–0 victory over Juventus in the Club World Cup round of 16—thanks to another goal from rising star Gonzalo García—Xabi Alonso’s side has now reached 66 official matches this season.
That number ties the club's all-time record, previously set in the 2001–02 season, when Zinédine Zidane’s team went on to win the Champions League. But beyond Madrid pride, what’s at stake now is a truly continental achievement.
Game 67: A European milestone within reach
The upcoming quarterfinal clash against Borussia Dortmund will be Real Madrid’s 67th match of the season—equaling the all-time European record for games played in a single campaign, a record currently held by Liverpool (1983–84) and Chelsea (2012–13).

Players like Federico Valverde and Luka Modric are quietly leading this charge. The Uruguayan has already featured in 70 games between club and country and is the most-used player by Alonso this season. Averaging 85 minutes per match, he has only missed six games all year, a testament to his durability.
Even more astonishing is Modric’s case. Nearing his 40th birthday, the Croatian maestro has played 61 matches for Real Madrid and 10 more for his national team. If he features against the German side, he will reach 72 appearances for the season—an incredible figure that speaks to his longevity and commitment.
Real Madrid is not only aiming to win the newly formatted Club World Cup, but also to cement its place among the most resilient teams in European football history. While the physical toll may eventually take its toll, for now, the Madrid squad remains strong—driven by seasoned veterans and young talents making a difference.
