Raúl Asencio: The Other Player Who Could Leave Real Madrid With Rodrygo After His Club World Cup Performance
Real Madrid’s painful exit in the Club World Cup semifinals (a 4-0 defeat to PSG) raised concerns not only about Rodrygo Goes, but also about Raúl Asencio. The academy graduate, who had sparked excitement earlier this season, has now become a source of doubt ahead of the summer transfer window. According to Spanish media, both the club’s sporting directors and Xabi Alonso are open to letting the two players leave — clearing space for younger talents who stepped up in the tournament, like Gonzalo García.
Asencio’s situation is particularly striking. He went from defensive revelation to liability, playing just 140 minutes across four matches, receiving a red card, and being involved in three costly errors that led to goals. He gave away the penalty in the draw against Al Hilal, was sent off just seven minutes into the match against Pachuca, and in the semifinal, a poor touch inside the box allowed Ousmane Dembélé to steal the ball and score the opener for PSG. His defensive duel win rate dropped from 75% in La Liga to just 40% in the tournament. As a result, the club is now considering either loaning him out or selling him permanently.

Rodrygo’s case is similarly complicated. The Brazilian played only 109 minutes across three games, registering one assist and losing his spot to the rising star Gonzalo García. With a 15-game goal drought and fierce competition from Vinícius Júnior, Kylian Mbappé, and the newly integrated Brahim Díaz, Rodrygo no longer has a guaranteed role. While Xabi Alonso has stated he plans to rotate the squad more once the season begins, many at Valdebebas see a solid transfer offer as the most logical outcome.
Clubs in the Premier League and Serie A are reportedly interested in Rodrygo, drawn by his age (24) and evident talent. Meanwhile, Asencio is attracting attention from mid-table LaLiga teams. Real Madrid’s strategy is clear: raise funds to strengthen key positions — like right-back and backup midfielder — and open up minutes for academy prospects such as Dean Huijsen and Gonzalo García.
This summer promises to be busy at the Bernabéu. The thrashing by PSG didn’t just hurt on the scoreboard — it was also a reality check, revealing who’s ready to be part of Xabi Alonso’s new project… and who must move on.
