Pep Guardiola and Ilkay Gundogan were left frustrated after Manchester City failed to move to the top of Club World Cup Group G, despite a huge win over Al Ain.

City beat Al Ain 6-0 on Sunday thanks to goals from Gundogan, Claudio Echeverri, Erling Haaland, Oscar Bobb, and Rayan Cherki.

Guardiola has now won all 10 of the Club World Cup games he has managed, including in the old format, by an aggregate scoreline of 33-2.

The Citizens completely dominated Al Ain, accumulating 3.92 expected goals to their opponent’s 0.44. However, that was not enough to satisfy either Gundogan or Guardiola.

City needed to score a seventh goal without conceding to move ahead of Juventus in Group G heading into their last group match against the Italian giants.

"We pushed and pushed to score another goal to try to [move] first, but we missed by one goal," said Guardiola, whose side also hit the post through a Josko Gvardiol effort in the first half.

"But yeah, we know what we need to do against [Juventus] to finish as number one.

"Now we have to see whether we'll be first or second in the group.

"We played a little bit better than the first game [Wydad AC], especially in the second half."

Gundogan added: "It felt like we needed the seventh at the end. We set that as our target at half-time, but unfortunately we didn't start the second half well enough, we were a bit slow. It felt like it cost us at the end.

"Even in the first half there were short periods where we were not that precise in terms of our passing and the way we played.

"It's something we need to observe and get better because at the highest level you should not allow yourself to be not good for such a long time.

"It felt quite long to be honest. It felt at least five or 10 minutes too long in terms of the standards we have.

"A seventh goal would have given us a higher probability, but it also doesn't matter. We need a good performance against Juve and to win the game."
