Gianluigi Donnarumma, goalkeeper for Paris Saint-Germain, said he is “deeply affected” by the incident that resulted in Jamal Musiala’s injury during the Club World Cup quarterfinal against Bayern Munich.

He was widely criticized on social media following the play, but he clarified his intentions in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport: “I’m very affected by what happened. It was never my intention to hurt Musiala.”

Agent Explains the Incident

Donnarumma’s agent, Vicenzo Raiola, also came forward to defend his client: “It’s unfair to think he meant to harm Musiala. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope he returns stronger.”

Raiola described the situation as a split-second event: “It only takes an instant for a save to turn into a penalty. Gigio got to the ball first and couldn’t avoid the contact.”

Raiola shared a behind-the-scenes moment: “In the locker room during halftime, Donnarumma did something he’s never done before—he turned on his phone and messaged me. He always turns it off before matches and only checks it after. This time, he told me how upset he was and that it wasn’t intentional.”
