The PSG goalkeeper expressed deep remorse after the collision that seriously injured Jamal Musiala during the Club World Cup. The Bayern Munich midfielder will undergo surgery after fracturing his fibula and dislocating his ankle.
Donnarumma Responds to Harsh Criticism
Gianluigi Donnarumma, goalkeeper for Paris Saint-Germain, said he is “deeply affected” by the incident that resulted in Jamal Musiala’s injury during the Club World Cup quarterfinal against Bayern Munich.
He was widely criticized on social media following the play, but he clarified his intentions in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport: “I’m very affected by what happened. It was never my intention to hurt Musiala.”
Agent Explains the Incident
Donnarumma’s agent, Vicenzo Raiola, also came forward to defend his client: “It’s unfair to think he meant to harm Musiala. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope he returns stronger.”
Raiola described the situation as a split-second event: “It only takes an instant for a save to turn into a penalty. Gigio got to the ball first and couldn’t avoid the contact.”
Responding to criticism about Donnarumma walking away after the incident, Raiola added: “He wasn’t pretending nothing happened. He’s a very sensitive person and preferred to step away so doctors could treat Musiala.”
Bayern Confirms Surgery for Musiala
According to Bayern Munich, Musiala, 22, has already flown back to Munich and will soon undergo surgery for a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle. The young midfielder had just returned to action after a lengthy injury layoff.
Raiola shared a behind-the-scenes moment: “In the locker room during halftime, Donnarumma did something he’s never done before—he turned on his phone and messaged me. He always turns it off before matches and only checks it after. This time, he told me how upset he was and that it wasn’t intentional.”
