Will Franco Mastantuono Play the Club World Cup With Real Madrid?
The young Argentine will still compete in the international tournament with River Plate before officially joining Los Blancos once he turns 18.
Real Madrid Secures the Signing, but the Wait Continues
All signs point to Franco Mastantuono becoming one of the next big additions to Real Madrid, although his arrival won’t happen immediately. The 17-year-old midfielder, currently playing for River Plate, has already given the green light to the transfer, but he will only join the Spanish side after the 2025 Club World Cup, meaning he will continue to wear the Argentine club’s shirt for the upcoming tournament.
Real Madrid will trigger his €45 million release clause, which will be paid in three installments as agreed between both clubs. The long-term contract — running until June 2031 — has already been approved by the player, who is fully informed of the salary terms.
While the transfer has yet to be officially announced, the deal is virtually complete. The final step will take place in August, once Mastantuono turns 18, allowing him to be officially registered with the Spanish giants.
Club World Cup: His Final Stage With River Plate
Before making the move to the Santiago Bernabéu, Franco Mastantuono will have one last major challenge with River Plate: the 2025 Club World Cup in the United States. This tournament will serve as a high-profile farewell for the talented youngster, giving him a platform to shine against top international clubs.
River will kick off their campaign on June 17 against Urawa Reds in Group E, followed by clashes with Rayados de Monterrey and Inter Milan. These matches offer Mastantuono valuable experience on the world stage before transitioning to European football.
Both clubs and the player’s camp believe this transitional phase will benefit everyone involved. At Real Madrid, he will be welcomed as part of the project led by Xabi Alonso, once he wraps up his international commitments with River Plate.
