Why Was the Palmeiras vs Al Ahly Match Suspended at the 2025 Club World Cup?
The second matchday clash in Group A at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, between Palmeiras and Al Ahly, was temporarily stopped due to a lightning storm near MetLife Stadium. The interruption came in the 60th minute, just after the Brazilian side scored their second goal.
Safety Protocol Kicks In, Fans Take Cover
Referee Anthony Taylor approached both benches to announce the start of the lightning safety protocol. Meanwhile, the stadium’s public address system urged fans to take shelter as officials waited for the all-clear to resume the match.
Palmeiras Holds the Upper Hand Before Suspension
Before the halt, Palmeiras, coached by Abel Ferreira, was in control. The “Verdão” had stretched their lead to 2-0 with a counterattack goal by José López in the 59th minute, after opening the scoring at the 49th minute thanks to an own goal by Wessam Abou Ali. With this partial score, Palmeiras was on track for their first win in the tournament and to take temporary top spot in Group A.
