What Does Boca Juniors Need to Advance to the Round of 16 in the Club World Cup?
Boca Juniors will play for their last chance to reach the Round of 16 in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 this Tuesday, when they take on Auckland City in Nashville, United States.
Group C Set for a Thrilling Finale
The Group C qualification will be decided in a high-stakes, simultaneous showdown. Both matches Boca Juniors vs. Auckland City and Bayern Munich vs. Benfica will be played at the same time, in what promises to be a dramatic conclusion to the group stage.
After drawing 2-2 with Benfica and losing 2-1 to the powerful Bayern Munich, Miguel Ángel Russo side not only needs to win they need to do so by a large margin and hope the German champions lend them a hand in the other group match.
Group C Standings Ahead of the Final Matchday
The race for second place is extremely tight. Bayern Munich has already secured qualification with six points and a +11 goal difference. Benfica follows with four points and a +6 goal differential. Boca Juniors, with just one point and a -1 goal difference, needs a very specific set of results to advance to the last 16.
Group C standings (before Matchday 3):
1st Bayern Munich | 6 pts | +11
2nd Benfica | 4 pts | +6
3rd Boca Juniors | 1 pt | -1
4th Auckland City | 0 pts | -16
What Boca Needs to Advance
To qualify, Boca must win and Benfica must lose. However, a simple victory won’t be enough goal difference will be the deciding factor.
Here are some possible scenarios that would see Boca reach the next round:
- If Benfica loses 1-0, Boca must win at least 6-0.
- If Benfica loses 2-0, Boca still needs a 6-0 win.
- If Benfica falls 3-0, a 5-0 win would be enough for Boca.
- If Bayern wins 4-0, Boca advances with a 4-0 result.
- And so on: for every goal Bayern increases their margin by, Boca needs one less.
This is because, if Boca and Benfica finish tied on points, goal difference is the first tiebreaker. If still level, goals scored will be used to separate them.
