The unexpected turn Cristiano Ronaldo could take to play the Club World Cup alongside Sergio Ramos with Monterrey
What seemed like a distant dream could become a reality: Rayados de Monterrey would be close to attempting the bombshell signing of Cristiano Ronaldo to strengthen their squad for the 2025 Club World Cup, which will be held in the United States. According to the well-known Spanish newspaper AS, the board of the Mexican club, led by José Antonio Noriega, would have already made a first formal approach to the Portuguese star's camp.
Monterrey’s proposal would consist of a contract of approximately one month, exclusively to play in the international tournament, taking advantage of the fact that FIFA’s regulations allow temporary reinforcements if the player has not officially played with more than two clubs in the same season. The offer would be around 5 million dollars, making it one of the highest amounts ever paid for a short-term reinforcement in Mexican football.
Ramos, the key in the operation
One of the factors that would have opened the door to this negotiation is the presence of Sergio Ramos, current defender for Rayados and former teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid. According to AS, Ramos has been key as a link between the parties, motivating the Portuguese with the idea of being part of a competitive squad that also includes other former LaLiga players like Sergio Canales and Óliver Torres.

Although clubs like Al Hilal, Palmeiras, Fluminense, and even Chelsea would also have shown interest in having Cristiano for the tournament, Monterrey appears to be the favorite thanks to their ambitious sporting project and the personal closeness between the Portuguese and Ramos.
While the final answer from the “Bicho” is awaited, the name of another possible star signing has emerged: Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez. The Argentine goalkeeper would be willing to play the tournament before deciding his future, which confirms that Rayados are serious about forming a true “Dream Team” for the summer of 2025.
