The PE Teacher Who Scored Against Boca Juniors at the Club World Cup!
In one of the most unexpected and heartwarming moments of the Club World Cup, Christian Gray, a 28-year-old physical education teacher, became the unlikely hero by scoring against Boca Juniors. His goal secured a 1-1 draw for Auckland City and officially eliminated the Argentine side from the tournament.

Gray isn’t a full-time professional footballer. In fact, he works as a teacher at Auckland Grammar School and had to take time off to compete in the tournament. His goal, the first scored by the New Zealand club in this edition of the Club World Cup, will go down in Oceania football history—and in the memories of Boca fans.
A draw that felt like a victory for Auckland
Boca Juniors, needing to beat Auckland City by a wide margin and hoping for a Bayern Munich win over Benfica, couldn't get the job done. Facing a team that had already been eliminated and thrashed in previous matches (10-0 by Bayern and 6-0 by Benfica), Boca failed to break through the resilient defense despite having over 70% possession and earning 11 corners in the first half alone.
The opening goal came courtesy of an own goal by goalkeeper Nathan Garrow in the 36th minute, momentarily putting Boca ahead. But early in the second half, Christian Gray rose highest to meet a corner and headed the ball home to level the match, prompting wild celebrations from the Auckland City bench.
At the final whistle, the New Zealand side celebrated the historic point as if they had won the tournament, while Boca Juniors were left with bitter disappointment.
A loyal fanbase that never gave up
Despite sweltering heat and high humidity, Boca Juniors fans packed Geodis Park in Nashville, turning the stands into a sea of blue and gold. Supporters traveled from Argentina and across the U.S., and even during a weather delay caused by a lightning storm in the second half, they never stopped chanting.
A potential winner by Merentiel was disallowed by VAR due to a handball by Zenón, and despite constant pressure, Boca couldn’t find the breakthrough.
