The Madness for Real Madrid in Miami: Al Hilal Fans Torn Between Two Loves
Football once again brought together cultures and passions at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, where the clash between Real Madrid and Al Hilal in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup stirred intense emotions. Before kickoff, many supporters of the Saudi club found themselves emotionally conflicted — they were cheering for their team, yet openly declared their love for the Spanish giants.
“I came just for this match”: Saudi passion for Madrid
"I came from Riyadh, I don’t know how many miles I’ve traveled… I came just for this match," said an Al Hilal fan. The admiration for Real Madrid was clear: “They’re one of the best teams in the world. But Al Hilal is the best in Asia. It’ll be a competitive match and we have a great chance.”
Before the game, fans eagerly answered classic football questions: Messi or Cristiano? “Cristiano, because ¡Hala Madrid!” The contradiction was evident as many wore jerseys from both teams. "I’m a Madridista and also an Al Hilal fan. So whoever wins today, I’ll be happy… but I’ll be a little happier if Al Hilal wins," admitted another.
A shaky debut for Xabi Alonso’s Madrid
It wasn’t a smooth start for Xabi Alonso’s new Real Madrid, who drew 1-1 against a well-organized and energetic Al Hilal. Youngster Gonzalo García put the Spanish side ahead after a fine team move started by Alexander-Arnold, but a careless penalty conceded by Raúl Asencio allowed Rúben Neves to equalize from the spot just before halftime.
The Spanish team showed glimpses of their new coach’s tactical ideas — a back four, Alexander-Arnold playing in midfield, and defensive support from the wingers — but the tempo was inconsistent and key players underperformed. Vinícius Jr. lacked spark, Jude Bellingham was isolated, and Federico Valverde’s missed penalty in the 90th minute, brilliantly saved by Yassine Bono, capped a disappointing night.
Despite some flashes from Arda Güler, who hit the crossbar, and the constant effort from Rodrygo and Valverde, Madrid couldn't find a breakthrough. Now they head into the clash against Pachuca with no room for error.
The passion in the stands was mirrored on the shirts — many lived this match with mixed emotions. Because when your opponent is also a part of your football story, the game becomes more than just a competition.
