The extreme heat affecting players at the Club World Cup
The U.S. summer has been relentless for the teams competing in the Club World Cup. Players and coaches are struggling with extreme weather conditions both during training sessions and matches, leading to widespread complaints from those involved.

One of the most demanding matches so far was the clash between PSG and Atlético Madrid, played at 12:00 p.m. under a scorching sun. The temperature hit 32°C (90°F), with an even higher heat index due to 60% humidity. Players from both sides clearly felt the toll. “We’re adapting to the heat of playing at this time. No European team is used to competing in such high temperatures,” said Atletico Marcos Llorente after the game.
Early Kickoffs and the Atletico Case in Los Angeles
To accommodate European TV audiences, the tournament schedule includes matches at unusual times for the participating teams, often in cities with extreme heat like Los Angeles. Atlético Madrid will face Botafogo at 12:00 p.m. once again, under conditions similar to their opener.
Miami Faces the Heat Too
The situation in Miami is no different. Clubs such as Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Boca Juniors, Manchester City, and Inter Miami are all based there for the tournament. During the opening match between Leo Messi Inter Miami and Al Ahly, the weather was again a major factor. Though kickoff was at 8:00 p.m., the temperature was still 28°C (82°F) with 76% humidity, making it feel much hotter. Several players were visibly affected by the conditions.
This Monday, Boca Juniors will face Benfica at 6:00 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium, with similar or even more demanding weather expected.
A Critical Time Slot for Real Madrid Debut
One of the most concerning kickoff times is 3:00 p.m. exactly when Real Madrid is scheduled to make its debut in Miami against Al Hilal. Forecasts are predicting temperatures around 32°C (90°F) during that time, presenting a major challenge for the players.
A Tournament at the Mercy of the Weather?
Players are increasingly worried about how these extreme temperatures might affect their performance. With the schedule already locked in, there’s little organizers can do. For now, everyone hopes that conditions will ease as the tournament progresses to ensure top-level football.
