Real Madrid Get Cold Feet Over Alvaro Carreras Transfer
The Spanish left-back was closely watched by the Real Madrid board during Benfica's Club World Cup debut, but his performance sparked more questions than confidence.
Underwhelming Start in the Club World Cup
Álvaro Carreras’ performance in Benfica’s Club World Cup opener against Boca Juniors has left mixed impressions among the Real Madrid hierarchy. Despite a prior agreement with the player, the Spanish giants still haven't settled terms with Benfica, who demand the full €52 million release clause to let him go. The 2–2 draw at the Hard Rock Stadium was closely monitored by Madrid fans hoping for a standout showing.
Although Carreras started and was active down the left flank, his outing lacked consistency. He frequently sought possession and tried to combine with striker Pavlidis, but struggled to deliver accurate crosses and was effectively shut down by veteran Luis Advíncula.
Is He Worth €52 Million?
Now the major question is whether Carreras merits the hefty price tag. Benfica have been firm—no deal will go through without the full release fee. Coach Bruno Lage stated clearly: “First, an agreement with Benfica; then Carreras can shine wherever he wants.”
In the match itself, Carreras had a quiet first half. Boca Juniors struck twice early through Merentiel and Battaglia, with the left-back not directly involved in the goals but also not influential in stopping the attacks. The second half showed improvement after a penalty goal from Ángel Di María and a red card to Andrea Belotti. Carreras stepped up, nearly scoring the winner after a strong individual effort and a right-footed shot.
In the closing minutes, Nicolás Otamendi headed home the equalizer for Benfica, giving the team a much-needed point. While Carreras showed flashes of his ability, it wasn’t a performance that firmly justified the €52 million fee.
For now, Real Madrid remains undecided. With the Club World Cup just beginning, the evaluation of Carreras will continue. Whether he becomes a cornerstone in Madrid’s future or the club redirects its investment elsewhere, only Florentino Pérez will make that final call.
