Real Madrid Faces Major Risk with Mastantuono Ahead of Club World Cup
Real Madrid has embarked on a major squad overhaul with the beginning of the Xabi Alonso era as head coach. After a disappointing season, the club has moved swiftly in the transfer market with a clear goal: to be fully prepared for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. However, this strategy brings significant risks—especially when it comes to one of the most promising names: Franco Mastantuono.
The young Argentine talent and star of River Plate has already been secured by Madrid for a fee of approximately €61 million including taxes. Although he has passed his medical and his arrival seems imminent, Mastantuono won’t be wearing the white shirt just yet. The club has decided he will join after the Club World Cup, partly due to River’s insistence on keeping him for the remainder of the Copa Libertadores.
This decision presents a considerable risk for the Spanish giants. Mastantuono is set to play in the international tournament with River, and any injury or physical setback could complicate his future integration at Madrid. Beyond health concerns, there’s also the competitive pressure: the club is not only monitoring his fitness but also evaluating his performance against high-level opponents—something that could influence or accelerate his integration process.
Alexander-Arnold Begins Training Under Xabi Alonso
Meanwhile, one of the signings already available for the Club World Cup is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who completed his first training session at Valdebebas. The former Liverpool star, whose move was finalized with a €10 million compensation fee, was welcomed by Xabi Alonso and his close friend Jude Bellingham, with whom he shares duties in the England national team.
The English right-back looked sharp during his first session, having played only limited minutes in recent international matches. With Dani Carvajal still recovering from a serious knee injury, all signs point to Alexander-Arnold starting in Real Madrid’s Club World Cup opener next Wednesday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami against Al-Hilal.
Also available for that match is Dean Huijsen, another key reinforcement for Alonso. However, players like Álvaro Carreras, still at Benfica, and Mastantuono will have to wait for their moment to officially join the squad.
Having key future players participate in the Club World Cup with other clubs is a high-stakes gamble for Madrid. Club executives and the coaching staff will be watching closely, knowing that any setback could alter the trajectory of their ambitious rebuilding project.
