Real Madrid Extends Modrić and Lucas Vázquez Contracts Until the End of the Club World Cup
Real Madrid has reached a short-term agreement to extend the contracts of Luka Modrić and Lucas Vázquez until July 13, 2025, to ensure their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. Both players were set to become free agents on June 30, but will now remain with the squad through the end of the tournament.
Contract Details: Short-Term Extensions, No Pay Rise
The agreement includes:
- A two-week extension, valid from June 30 to July 13, 2025, the date of the Club World Cup final
- No changes in salary or contract terms
- The deal will be signed between May 25 and June 18, in the gap between the final matchday of LaLiga and the start of the Club World Cup
The club is opting for continuity, but only temporarily, with no guarantees beyond the summer tournament.
Uncertain Futures for Two Veterans
This extension does not clarify what will happen beyond July:
- Lucas Vázquez faces stiff competition for the right-back position, especially with Trent Alexander-Arnold reportedly on Madrid’s radar, which could limit his future role.
- Modrić , at 39 years old, is open about his desire to play for Croatia until the 2026 World Cup, but staying at Real Madrid may require accepting a reduced salary and a less prominent role.
The club will reassess both situations after the tournament ends.
Club World Cup Impact
The presence of both veterans is seen as valuable for the Club World Cup, where Real Madrid will face Al Hilal, Pachuca, and Salzburg in the group stage. Their experience and leadership are expected to contribute significantly as Carlo Ancelotti’s squad looks to lift another global title.
Once the Club World Cup concludes, Real Madrid will decide whether to extend either player’s contract further or part ways after more than a decade of service in both cases.
