Neymar Could Join Pachuca and Face Real Madrid at the 2025 Club World Cup
Just days before the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 kicks off in the United States, a stunning rumor has shaken the football world: Neymar Jr. could become a surprise signing for Pachuca, the Liga MX club set to represent Mexico in the tournament. With his contract at Santos FC expiring on June 30, the Brazilian star may be seeking one last big-stage appearance — potentially against Real Madrid in the group stage.
Was it Pachuca who approached Neymar?
There’s been some back-and-forth in the reporting. While RTI Esporte claimed that Pachuca opened talks with Neymar on May 28, sources from RÉCORD suggest it was actually Neymar’s camp that initiated contact, offering the player to the club through a proposal shared with nearly every participating team in the tournament.
The biggest challenge? Neymar’s wage demands. Brazilian media estimate his salary could reach 97 million MXN (approx. $5.6M USD) for just one month. Still, Marca reports that Pachuca’s board is seriously evaluating the opportunity, considering both the sporting and marketing impact of such a blockbuster signing.
FIFA rules would allow the move under an exceptional transfer window for the Club World Cup, enabling temporary reinforcements solely for the tournament.
Neymar vs. Real Madrid: A familiar rivalry in a new jersey
Perhaps the most exciting element of this potential transfer is the Group H lineup: Pachuca, Real Madrid, Al Hilal, and Red Bull Salzburg. Neymar would have the chance to renew his historic rivalry with Los Blancos, this time wearing the shirt of Pachuca — a surreal image for football fans.
Having faced Madrid multiple times with Barcelona and PSG, Neymar’s presence would drastically elevate the group’s level of play and media attention.

Is the move realistic?
Though no deal has been confirmed, reports suggest Santos president Marcelo Teixeira has already been informed of Pachuca’s interest. While Neymar has expressed a desire to remain in Brazil or return to Europe, the global exposure of the Club World Cup could tempt him into a short-term deal.
The 33-year-old Brazilian would join a team that has already added names like Robert Kenedy, José Castillo, and Agustín Palavecino, but none would match the scale — or star power — of Neymar.
