Manchester City Star Faces New Injury Concern After ACL Recovery
Manchester City midfielder Rodri has suffered a fresh injury setback just weeks after returning from a serious ACL and meniscus injury that sidelined him for most of the 2024-25 season.
The reigning Ballon d’Or winner made his long-awaited comeback at the FIFA Club World Cup, but was forced off in extra time during City’s dramatic 4-3 defeat to Al Hilal in the round of 16. Rodri, who had only recently resumed first-team training and played limited minutes in the Premier League, was introduced as a substitute in the 53rd minute but did not finish the match due to a new physical complaint.
Rodri’s initial injury—a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus damage—occurred in September during a league match against Arsenal, which required surgery and led to an absence of nearly nine months.
His return to action was seen as a major boost for Pep Guardiola’s side, who struggled for consistency and lost their grip on domestic and European trophies during his absence.
Guardiola and the club’s medical staff had eased Rodri back into the squad, allowing him to play only a handful of minutes before the Club World Cup, with the hope of gradually increasing his workload.
Guardiola Urges Patience as City Regroup
Following the setback, Guardiola confirmed to reporters that Rodri is again under medical observation. “We have to see Rodri, he complained about his situation, but we need time to come back,” Guardiola said after the match. The manager emphasized the importance of caution, noting the long and challenging recovery process for ACL and meniscus injuries.
Medical experts and Guardiola alike have stressed that such injuries can take 9–12 months for full recovery, and setbacks are not uncommon as players return to high-intensity competition.
Despite Rodri’s availability, City struggled in their Club World Cup exit. Guardiola admitted the team “allowed [Al Hilal] to make transitions” and failed to control the match defensively, with the Spanish midfielder’s absence felt in key moments.
The loss capped a difficult campaign for City, who will now shift their focus to recovery and preparation for the 2025-26 Premier League season, which begins August 16 against Wolves.
Rodri will use the offseason to rest and continue his rehabilitation, with City’s medical team closely monitoring his progress. Guardiola remains hopeful that with patience and careful management, Rodri can return to his best and anchor the midfield for another title challenge next season.
However, this latest setback is a reminder of the challenges elite players face coming back from major knee injuries—even with the best medical care and support.
