Luis Enrique says Botafogo “defended us better than anyone all season” after PSG’s loss
Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique admitted that the 1–0 loss to Botafogo in the group stage of the 2025 Club World Cup was a tough one to swallow — but also a wake-up call. Speaking in the post-match press conference, the Spanish manager didn’t hold back his praise for the Brazilian side, calling them “the team that has defended us the best all season.”
The lone goal from the Rio de Janeiro side ended up being the difference, and according to Luis Enrique, it was a fair reflection of their performance: “They defended really well. On our side, we just didn’t create the chances we usually do.” The defeat leaves PSG in a tricky spot in Group B, which also includes Atlético de Madrid.
Trust in PSG’s bounce-back ability
Despite the setback, Luis Enrique showed faith in his squad’s ability to bounce back: “If there’s a team that can turn things around, it’s ours. We need to review the game, learn from it, and work on what needs improving. Effort and attitude were spot on — we just weren’t sharp in the final third.”
Looking ahead, the coach knows the next match against the Seattle Sounders on June 23 is crucial: “We need to prepare with ambition and make sure everything depends on us.”
Even with the defeat, the Spanish coach made it clear PSG won’t back down: “No one knows what’s going to happen in this group stage. But what’s certain is that it’s going to be tough, and we’ve got to face it head-on — just like we always do.”
