Lionel Messi breaks the silence after elimination from the Club World Cup: “We leave with pride”
Inter Miami's star stood up after the devastating elimination from the FIFA tournament and was proud of the role they played.

Criticism came fast
As happens with every setback, social media lit up with criticism of Lionel Messi. Despite his legacy and achievements, the Argentine once again became a target following Inter Miami’s elimination. Some questioned his influence on the match, others doubted whether he still belongs at the highest level, and—as has happened at other points in his career—some even labeled him a “bottler.”
The debate flared between those who expected more from the Rosario-born captain and those who defended his performance given the squad disparity and PSG’s dominance. At 38, Messi knows how to live with pressure, but this time, the noise was hard to ignore.
Perspective and respect
At 38, Messi acknowledged the difference in level between Miami and the European elite: “PSG is an amazing team. Obviously, they're the reigning Champions League winners, and they’re playing very well… we showed a good image, we competed, and now it’s time to focus on our own goals.”
He also expressed gratitude for reuniting with some of his former teammates—and, of course, with Luis Enrique.
What’s next for Messi and Inter Miami?
With their Club World Cup journey over, the focus shifts back to MLS. Inter Miami sits sixth in the Eastern Conference, although they’ve played four fewer matches than most of their direct rivals. The schedule is tight, but the opportunity to climb is real.
For Messi, the challenge is clear: to prove that at 38, he can still lead his team to a title in American soccer. Praise or criticism aside, he remains the face of the Miami project—and all signs point to more chapters left to write in his MLS story.
