Karma? Urawa Red Diamonds' Captain Refused to Greet River Players Before El Millonario’s Epic Club World Cup Win
River Plate’s debut in Group E of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup against Urawa Red Diamonds offered more than just a 3-1 result. Before the ball even started rolling at Seattle’s imposing Lumen Field, one moment caught everyone’s eye: Marius Høibråten, captain of the Japanese side, deliberately refused to greet the Argentine players during the pre-match protocol, breaking the spirit of sportsmanship that usually defines these international fixtures.
The incident occurred as both teams entered the pitch. El Millonario’s players lined up in the traditional welcoming formation, following FIFA regulations. Yet, the Norwegian defender walked right past them without even pretending to extend a hand—unlike the rest of his teammates, who did greet their rivals normally. Cameras captured the stunned reactions of Germán Pezzella and Gonzalo Montiel, who stared at Høibråten after the snub.
The snub that fired up River… and ended in a tough loss for Urawa
The Japanese captain’s gesture quickly went viral on social media, with many calling it “unsportsmanlike” and, after the final result, “karma.” On the pitch, River Plate proved far superior. In the 12th minute, a pinpoint cross from Marcos Acuña found Facundo Colidio, who headed it in with ease to open the scoring.
Høibråten was again in the spotlight during River’s second goal: his poorly aimed header back toward his goalkeeper was intercepted by Sebastián Driussi, who netted the 2-0. Unfortunately, Driussi was injured during the play, and initial fears suggest a potentially serious issue. To add insult to injury, the Norwegian defender had also scored earlier—but the goal was ruled out due to a clear offside, further fueling the online buzz.
Urawa’s only goal came from a penalty taken by Yusuke Matsuo, but their comeback attempt was short-lived. In the second half, Maximiliano Meza sealed the game with another header from a corner, again assisted by Acuña.
Despite the positive result, Marcelo Gallardo wasn’t fully satisfied. Driussi’s injury and defensive lapses will force him to make adjustments ahead of their next group-stage clash against Rayados de Monterrey.

Still, beyond the football itself, Høibråten’s gesture remained one of the day’s most talked-about moments. Because while football may allow room for controversial acts, this time, River Plate answered with goals and class.
