It Was the Most Expensive Signing in the History of Liverpool and Has Been Offered to River Plate for the Club World Cup
Darwin Núñez could be loaned to River Plate ahead of the next Club World Cup
These are happy days at River Plate, which hasn't known defeat since March 6 against Talleres in the Supercopa Argentina and, in addition, has just beaten Boca Juniors in the Superclásico and crushed Vélez Sarsfield, sending a message to Guillermo Barros Schelotto. But, while they are preparing for their next match against Barcelona SC in the Copa Libertadores, they have received a lucrative offer for the Club World Cup that will take place this summer in the United States.

Darwin Núñez is not needed by Liverpool
The offer is for Darwin Núñez, for whom Liverpool paid Benfica more than 85 million euros in the summer of 2022, making it the most expensive signing in their history. His arrival at Anfield was seen as a response to the arrival of Erling Haaland that same summer at Manchester City. However, he has been far from delivering the expected impact during the three seasons he has worn the Liverpool jersey, where he has only managed to score 40 goals in 140 appearances. At Benfica, for example, he only needed 85 games to score 48 goals.
It was a signing that Jürgen Klopp specifically requested from the board to accompany Luis Díaz in the rebuilding effort that needed to be made in the Liverpool attack after the departures of Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané. However, he has never truly become a forward that Arne Slot likes, and this season, he has had minimal involvement in the attack of a Liverpool team that, ultimately, has been crowned Premier League champions. Darwin Núñez, for his part, has only started 17 of the 44 matches he has played this season, in which he has barely managed to score seven goals.
Darwin Núñez was offered to River Plate
In recent weeks, several incidents from England have emerged that could have placed Darwin Núñez on the market. At 25 years old, he is convinced that this summer he must leave Anfield, especially considering that the 2026 World Cup is approaching. However, Liverpool is aware that there is still a significant amount of money to be amortized from his transfer, and right now, they know they would have to sell him for much less than his actual market value. Therefore, they are exploring different options to increase Darwin Núñez's value for a future transfer.
Taking advantage of the transfer window that will open before the Club World Cup, where Liverpool will not participate, 'DSports' reports that the Liverpool directors have proposed that Darwin Núñez be loaned to River Plate so that he can revalue himself. However, the high salary of his current contract at Anfield makes the operation difficult to finalize unless Liverpool covers part of the player's wages. But, even though it seems complicated, talks are still ongoing between both sides to find the right formula for Darwin Núñez to wear the River Plate jersey.
