Griezmann Under Fire After PSG’s 4–0 Rout of Atlético in Club World Cup
The French striker drew heavy criticism from Spanish pundits after his team’s crushing defeat in their tournament opener.
Analysts Slam Atlético’s Starting XI
Atlético de Madrid’s heavy loss to Paris Saint-Germain in their Club World Cup debut has sparked intense media backlash, particularly regarding Diego Simeone’s decision to start Antoine Griezmann in the attack. The 4–0 result against the French giants left analysts at Cope’s “Tiempo de Juego” stunned by the absence of Alexander Sorloth in the starting eleven.
“I can’t believe Sorloth didn’t start,” said Gonzalo Miró, adding that the Norwegian striker had shown much better form in recent matches than Griezmann, who hasn’t been a regular starter. “If I were him or his agent, after today, I’d be thinking about finding a new club,” he added.
Maldini Questions Griezmann’s Future at Atlético
Veteran football journalist Julio Maldonado 'Maldini' took the criticism further, openly questioning why Griezmann is still at Atlético de Madrid. Despite recently extending his contract until June 2027, the French forward’s impact has been inconsistent, raising doubts about his role in the squad moving forward.
The match itself exposed significant flaws in Atlético’s attacking game, with neither Griezmann nor Julián Álvarez able to pose a real threat to PSG’s backline, led by Lucas Hernández—a former teammate of Griezmann, seen comforting him at full-time.
While Paris Saint-Germain continue their campaign as one of the tournament’s frontrunners, pressure is mounting in Madrid. The decision-making of Simeone and the contributions of experienced players like Griezmann are under growing scrutiny. And though the coach has publicly defended the veteran forward, public opinion appears to be shifting fast.
