Galatasaray Races for İlkay Gündoğan: Is the German Star Saying Goodbye to Manchester City?
The Turkish club emerges as the likely new destination for the veteran German midfielder.
The transfer market continues to bring surprises, and one of the most intriguing moves may soon become a reality. According to several reports, Galatasaray is in advanced talks to sign İlkay Gündoğan, currently playing for Manchester City, where he has taken on a secondary role in this new phase of the English club.
At 33, Gündoğan is seeing his playing opportunities diminish under Pep Guardiola, who has significantly reshaped the squad after a disappointing, trophyless season. According to media like The Guardian, City’s management is reportedly open to letting him leave on a free transfer, potentially clearing the way for his move to Turkish football.
A chapter closing in Manchester
The German international has been one of the pillars of Manchester City in recent years. He arrived from Borussia Dortmund and gradually became a key figure in the Citizens’ midfield, contributing to the team’s multiple titles, including the long-awaited Champions League.
However, this season has marked a turning point. In City’s recent debut at the Club World Cup, where they defeated Wydad Casablanca 2-0, Gündoğan came off the bench alongside players like Erling Haaland and Rodri, but failed to make a significant impact. Guardiola, focused on rebuilding the team, has turned to new faces like Reijnders and Cherki, pushing the veteran midfielder further down the pecking order.
Additionally, the Spanish coach made a rare decision by choosing Bernardo Silva himself as the new captain, breaking the tradition of allowing the players to vote. This move is another clear sign that Guardiola is initiating a new cycle, in which Gündoğan may no longer have a prominent role.
A new challenge at Galatasaray
Galatasaray is looking to capitalize on the situation by adding experience and leadership to their squad. The Turkish side, a regular in European competitions and eager to reclaim continental prominence, sees Gündoğan as a valuable addition whose international experience could prove vital both domestically and in UEFA tournaments.
Although the transfer is not yet official, all signs point to the midfielder leaving the Etihad Stadium in the coming weeks. If finalized, it would mark the beginning of a new chapter for one of the most successful German footballers of the past decade.
