Fede Valverde Reveals How Badly Mbappé is Doing after Missing Real Madrid’s Club World Cup Debut
Real Madrid begins its journey in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup without one of its star players: Kylian Mbappé. The French forward has been ruled out of the team's debut match against Al-Hilal due to a fever that kept him resting in his room. The news was confirmed by Uruguayan midfielder Fede Valverde, who shared details about the player's condition and emphasized how crucial his presence will be for the rest of the tournament.
Valverde discusses Mbappé's health and the team's new era
"He had a cold and could barely leave his room," Valverde explained in the pre-match press conference. "Wishing him a speedy recovery—we're going to need him later on," he added, making it clear the team chose not to risk the Frenchman this early in the competition.

Despite the setback, Valverde highlighted the positive energy within the squad: “There’s a new atmosphere, a new coaching staff, and new players. We’re excited to get off to a good start and change everything.” He also praised new head coach Xabi Alonso, who is making his managerial debut for the club: “What the coach wants from us is very good, but it will take time. We’ll use these days to keep improving.”
Gonzalo García steps in for Mbappé
In Mbappé's absence, young talent Gonzalo García, a product of Real Madrid’s academy who recently stood out with Castilla, has been chosen to lead the attack. The coaching staff aims to preserve the team's tactical structure without rushing Mbappé's recovery, which will continue to be assessed daily ahead of future matches.
High expectations for Madrid's debut
The match between Real Madrid and Al-Hilal, part of Group H, takes place this Wednesday, June 18, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Despite missing their biggest star, the Spanish giants remain heavy favorites and are confident their deep squad can deliver a strong performance in the opener.
Under the leadership of Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid hopes to kick off the tournament with a solid win, while fans eagerly await Mbappé’s return. Valverde’s message reflects the team's unity and belief in a promising campaign for Los Blancos on the international stage.
