Cristiano Ronaldo Explains Why He Turned Down the Club World Cup
Despite receiving multiple offers from qualified teams, Cristiano Ronaldo has officially ruled out participating in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, choosing instead to prioritize rest and strategic planning for the upcoming season.
Why Did Ronaldo Decide Not to Play?
The Al-Nassr striker stated that he turned down invitations because he prefers to be fully rested and focused on what promises to be a demanding year. With the Saudi Pro League and the 2025 FIFA World Cup with Portugal on the horizon, Ronaldo emphasized the importance of managing his physical condition and workload.
Were There Clubs Interested in Signing Him?
Yes. According to Marcelo Gallardo, River Plate made an informal approach, and other South American clubs reportedly showed interest in signing Ronaldo specifically for the Club World Cup. However, the Portuguese forward evaluated the proposals and made it clear:
“It didn’t make sense to change environments just for this tournament.”

What Does This Mean for His Future?
As he renews his contract with Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo made it clear that his top priorities are winning titles in Saudi Arabia and maintaining top form to contribute to Portugal’s national team.
By skipping the Club World Cup, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner is betting on longevity, conserving his energy for what he hopes will be a successful international run later this year.
