Cristiano Ronaldo could play the Club World Cup after this surprising twist
The future of Cristiano Ronaldo is back in the spotlight on the international transfer scene—this time with a surprising twist: Wydad Casablanca, from Morocco, is reportedly interested in signing the Portuguese star to boost their squad for the FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in the summer of 2025. According to Marca, the Moroccan club has already started making moves to bring in CR7, at least just for the tournament.
The idea behind signing the five-time Ballon d'Or winner is both sporting and strategic. Wydad is one of four African clubs competing in this historic edition of the tournament, which will feature 32 teams, and sees Ronaldo as a high-profile addition who could help them challenge the global powerhouses and gain unprecedented media exposure at the same time.
Uncertain future and multiple offers on the table
With things still unclear at Al-Nassr, where his contract is close to ending and his future remains up in the air, Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly weighing his options ahead of the summer transfer window. While he's still the face of the Saudi project, the team’s performances haven’t lived up to expectations, and the club has yet to decide whether to extend his stay or move on.
Wydad isn’t the only team in the mix. Over in Brazil, clubs like Palmeiras, Flamengo, Fluminense, and Botafogo—all of whom have qualified for the tournament—are also said to be interested in signing CR7. In Spain, Almería has been mentioned as a potential destination, thanks to its ties with Saudi Arabia. Still, the Moroccan offer stands out for its symbolic value: bringing a European football legend to the heart of Africa for a world-class competition.
Even FIFA seems to be on board with the idea of having both Ronaldo and Lionel Messi—who’s already confirmed to play with Inter Miami—in the tournament. If Ronaldo were to join Wydad Casablanca, it would be a massive headline grabber and a historic chance for African football to share the global stage with the sport’s biggest stars.
