Courtois Staying: Real Madrid to Extend the Belgian Keeper Contract Until 2028
From 2018 to 2028. A full decade at Real Madrid. Thibaut Courtois now has the opportunity to complete ten years as the club first choice goalkeeper and all signs point to that becoming a reality. The club has decided to place its trust in him once again and offer a contract extension through to 2028. Despite past injuries, Courtois remains a top performer and a key figure in the squad.

In the offices of Chamartín, the option of signing Joan García, the young Espanyol goalkeeper, was seriously considered. With a price tag of around $28 million, he was an attractive prospect. But in the end, it didn’t make sense. Why? Because Courtois is still Courtois. The decision was as straightforward as it was significant: the club is sticking with the Belgian giant.
Real Madrid Confidence in Courtois Remains Strong
Courtois current contract runs until 2026. However, Real Madrid is willing to break one of its long standing policies: offering players over 30 more than a one year extension. In this case, there’s full trust in the player professionalism and ability. The plan is to offer him a new two-year deal, keeping him at the club until 2028.
The formal offer is expected to be made after the Club World Cup. For now, all attention is on the tournament. But the intentions are clear on all sides: both the club and the player want to continue together. Courtois camp is optimistic, and the goalkeeper is said to be happy and settled.
Quality and Experience in Goal
Courtois is seen as the club short and medium term solution in goal. The long term will be dealt with in time. The Belgian will turn 36 in May 2028, still a competitive age for a top level goalkeeper. Right now, there no reason to doubt his ability. His injury troubles are in the past, and his hunger for trophies remains undiminished.
Joan García Left on the Sidelines
In recent months, Joan García name appeared high on the club’s radar. At just 24, Spanish, and with strong performances to his name, he was seen as one of the bargains of the summer. On May 30. Ultimately, the operation didn’t progress. García understood that Courtois would remain the starter, and dethroning him is close to impossible.
Extension to Be Finalized After Club World Cup
Once the Club World Cup concludes, Real Madrid will put the new contract on the table. All parties agree: the priority now is sporting focus. But soon, the matter will be addressed calmly and positively. The club intends to offer a two year extension, taking Courtois through to June 2028. The ball is in the keeper’s court.
A Decade of Success
If he signs, it will mark a decade since Courtois joined Real Madrid from Chelsea in the summer of 2018 for $40 million. The rest is history: 282 official appearances, ranking him 50th in the club’s all-time list. With a few more years, he could easily break into the top 20.
His trophy haul speaks for itself: two Champions League titles, three LaLiga trophies, one Copa del Rey, one Intercontinental Cup, two Club World Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, and three Spanish Super Cups.
And Courtois wants more. There still history to be made. He expected to start in the Club World Cup, and afterwards, sit down with the club to finalize a negotiation that appears to be a mere formality. The feeling is mutual. Courtois is happy at Real Madrid, and the renewal is his to accept. A decade at the Bernabéu awaits. One more year plus two more seasons. From 2018 to 2028.
