Atletico Madrid Failure, Eliminated From the Club World Cup Should Diego Simeone Be Sacked?
Atlético Madrid became the first major disappointment of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Despite a 1-0 win over Botafogo in their final Group B match, the Spanish side was eliminated in the group stage after failing to achieve the goal difference needed to advance to the Round of 16.

Simeone Plan Falls Short
Diego “Cholo” Simeone started the match with an attacking trio of Rodrigo De Paul, his son Giuliano Simeone, and Julián Álvarez. However, the offensive effort lacked depth and efficiency. Nahuel Molina and Ángel Correa came on in the second half to try to turn things around, while Juan Musso remained on the bench.
Griezmann Scores, But It’s Not Enough
The only goal of the match came from Antoine Griezmann, who ended a goal drought that dated back to February. Still, the goal was not enough Atlético needed to win by at least three goals to overcome the group goal differential and move forward.
The Spanish side controlled the pace of the game, especially in the latter stages of the first half, but failed to convert their dominance into goals. Botafogo, meanwhile, defended with discipline and withstood Atlético attacks.
Controversial Officiating
Mexican referee César Ramos was a central figure in the match, drawing criticism for not awarding at least two potential penalties in favor of Atlético, both involving fouls on Julián Álvarez. The calls or lack thereof sparked strong protests from the Spanish bench.
Atlético Out, Questions Remain
With Atlético eliminated, Paris Saint-Germain and Botafogo secured their places in the Round of 16 as the first- and second-place teams from Group B, respectively. In the other group match, PSG defeated Seattle Sounders 2-0 to top the standings.
The early exit raises serious questions about Atlético Madrid direction. Should the club board reconsider Diego Simeone future at the helm, or does the longtime manager deserve another chance?
