(VIDEO) The first goal of Xabi Alonso era with Real Madrid was scored by a youth player
The young Real Madrid Castilla forward was handed a surprise start this Wednesday against Saudi side Al Hilal in Los Blancos Club World Cup debut. With Kylian Mbappé sidelined due to a fever, Gonzalo García seized the opportunity and made history as the first player to score under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Rising to the Occasion
Gonzalo, 21, started as the central striker and made an immediate impact by netting the opening goal after finishing off a precise assist from Rodrygo. The goal not only broke the deadlock but also earned him the distinction of being the first scorer in the Xabi Alonso era at Real Madrid.
A Homegrown Talent Ready to Shine
Despite limited appearances with the first team, Gonzalo had already made headlines earlier this season. In a Copa del Rey match against Leganés, he scored a last minute goal that secured Real Madrid place in the semifinals. His official debut came on November 26, 2023, when he replaced Rodrygo in the 78th minute of a LaLiga match against Cádiz.
Madrid Roots and a Complete Development Path
Born in Madrid in 2003, Gonzalo joined the Real Madrid youth academy in 2014 after stints with clubs such as SEK, Santa Bárbara, and Jarama Race. He progressed through all levels of the club youth system before establishing himself with Castilla. During the 2018–19 season, he spent a year on loan with Mallorca cadet team due to family circumstances but returned to Valdebebas the following year.
Now under contract until June 2027, his stock continues to rise. A self declared admirer of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo is eager to follow in his idol footsteps. And with his recent performances, the academy product is showing he’s ready to shine whenever his number is called.
