Newcastle United must "count the cost" of Saturday's FA Cup triumph over Bournemouth, with Eddie Howe's squad being further stretched ahead of their EFL Cup semi-final against Manchester City.

Aaron Ramsdale saved penalties from Evanilson, Alex Jimenez and Bafode Diakite to deny his former club a place in the fourth round, as Newcastle won 7-6 in a shoot-out.

That came after a topsy-turvy 3-3 draw that saw Anthony Gordon force extra time with a 95th-minute penalty, before Marcus Tavernier took the tie to spot-kicks with a 122nd-minute equaliser of his own.

But after holding their nerve from 12 yards, Newcastle have reached at least the fourth round of the FA Cup in three consecutive seasons for the first time since 2019-20 (four in a row).

And the EFL Cup holders are also in with a chance of defending that trophy, as they are at home for the first leg of their semi-final tie against City on Tuesday. The reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium is scheduled for February 4.

But as well as his players having to play 120 minutes on Saturday, Howe lost key full-back Tino Livramento to an apparent hamstring injury.

And with Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Anthony Elanga already on the injury list, Newcastle could be left thin for their midweek match.

"The players have worked far harder than we wanted them to with extra-time, especially with Tuesday in mind," Howe said after Saturday's game.

"But the priority was to try to get through and to stay in the competition, and we've managed that, so we're very pleased.

"Now we've got to count the cost of it, really, and try to regroup and try to get the players fresh for Tuesday."

Bournemouth, meanwhile, were playing their first game since the reported £65m sale of Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City – the Ghanian scored on his debut for his new club on Saturday, as they crushed Exeter City 10-1.

Head coach Andoni Iraola said: "It's difficult to find a more FA Cup game than this one. I think, very difficult.

"I'm proud of being part of this game, but you want to go to the next round, and this is what matters in the cup, and we are unfortunately out of the competition."
