Marc-André Ter Stegen's Move to Ajax Delayed
The future of Marc-André ter Stegen remains unresolved. Although the German goalkeeper has reportedly reached an agreement with Ajax to play the 2026/27 season in the Eredivisie, negotiations with FC Barcelona have stalled because of financial differences regarding the distribution of his salary.
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, the goalkeeper has already approved the Dutch club's sporting project and is ready to travel to Amsterdam for his medical examination. However, the transfer cannot be finalized until both clubs agree on how to divide the German international's substantial wages and address the tax implications of the monthly payments.
According to several Dutch media reports, FC Barcelona is willing to continue covering most of Ter Stegen's salary, which exceeds €10 million for the 2026/27 campaign. However, Ajax is looking to reduce its financial risk by making its share of the goalkeeper's wages dependent on the number of minutes he plays.
The Girona Loan Serves as a Warning
Ajax's caution is rooted in recent experience. Last season, Ter Stegen joined Girona on loan, but a serious thigh injury limited him to just two official appearances before he underwent surgery.
Despite the goalkeeper's limited playing time, FC Barcelona honored its commitment by paying nearly all of his agreed salary throughout the loan spell. That experience has prompted the Dutch club to seek contractual clauses that would protect its investment should the German suffer another significant injury.
While negotiations continue, Ter Stegen, whose contract with the Catalan club runs through 2028, has already returned to preseason training with FC Barcelona. He is scheduled to undergo mandatory medical and fitness tests on Monday and is expected to receive full medical clearance to resume competitive action after several months of rehabilitation.
Ajax Hopes to Complete the Deal Before the Season Begins
Time is becoming a factor for Ajax. The Dutch giants began preseason training on July 1, have already played two friendly matches, and are preparing for their UEFA Conference League qualifying debut on July 23 against either Ferencváros or NK Vojvodina.
Signing a goalkeeper with Ter Stegen's pedigree is considered a priority for the Amsterdam club. Throughout his career, the German international has established himself as one of Europe's elite goalkeepers thanks to his outstanding distribution, composure under pressure, shot-stopping ability, and leadership—qualities that made him a cornerstone of FC Barcelona for many seasons.
Now fully recovered, Ter Stegen is determined to regain regular playing time and return to his best form. A move to Ajax could provide the ideal opportunity to revive his career, while FC Barcelona hopes to reduce its wage bill without completely losing control of one of the most experienced goalkeepers in European soccer.
