Sore Losers? Arsenal Stars Take Humiliating Fleetwood Defeat Badly
Arsenal suffered a stunning Carabao Cup exit against fourth-tier Fleetwood Town. Goalkeeper Jay Lynch has revealed how Mikel Arteta's players reacted after their humiliating defeat.
Arsenal suffered one of the biggest shocks of the 2026–27 Carabao Cup when they were knocked out by Fleetwood Town, a fourth-tier side. But the drama didn't end with the penalty shootout. Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch, one of the heroes of the historic upset, has revealed how the Premier League champions reacted to their humiliating elimination.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Lynch explained that Arsenal's players left the field without much interaction with their opponents. Although a pitch invasion made it difficult for the two teams to exchange words, the goalkeeper suggested that the visitors were far from pleased with the result.
"They didn't take it well, let's put it that way," Lynch said, revealing that Fleetwood's players didn't even get the chance to ask their opponents for shirts following the final whistle.
Wild Celebrations Take Over the Pitch
Fleetwood's remarkable victory sparked a massive pitch invasion at Highbury Stadium, with home supporters flooding the field to celebrate a historic place in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals.
"It's obviously such a huge moment for us and all the fans ran on, no one actually got chance to speak to them," Lynch explained. He added that the managers briefly exchanged words, but the chaotic scenes meant Fleetwood's players couldn't speak with Arsenal's stars or swap shirts.
How Fleetwood Pulled Off the Upset
The League Two side took a surprise lead in the 21st minute through Aaron Loupalo-Bi, before Viktor Gyökeres brought Arsenal level shortly after halftime. Despite dominating possession and introducing Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Arteta's team couldn't find a winner.
Things got worse when Max Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute after lashing out at Harrison Neal following a heavy challenge. With the score tied at 1-1, the match went to penalties, where Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães' attempt before Conor Haughey converted the decisive kick to secure a stunning 5-3 shootout victory.

More Trouble for Mikel Arteta
The defeat leaves Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, out of a competition they had hoped to win this season. Arteta must also deal with the fallout from Dowman's red card, which the club has appealed.
For Fleetwood, the victory represents one of the greatest nights in club history. Sitting 18th in League Two heading into the match, the Cod Army produced an unforgettable upset, with Jay Lynch playing a decisive role in sending one of England's biggest clubs crashing out.
