Liverpool showed no mercy against Tottenham Hotspur, beating the Spurs 3-1 at Anfield to advance to the Round of 16 of the 2026 EFL Cup. The Reds settled the match with goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai, while Conor Gallagher scored Tottenham's consolation goal.
MAC ALLISTER AND GAKPO SET LIVERPOOL ON THEIR WAY
Alexis Mac Allister put Liverpool ahead in the 21st minute after pouncing on a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area and firing a powerful shot into the top corner. The Argentine once again emerged as a key attacking threat for Andoni Iraola's side.
The second blow came in the 54th minute. Cody Gakpo received the ball inside the box and finished with his right foot to make it 2-0 and extend the hosts' lead. The move came after a dangerous attacking combination in which Mac Allister played a key role as the provider.
Tottenham responded in the 69th minute through Conor Gallagher, who took advantage of a ball delivered from a corner kick to score with a header and make it 2-1. The goal gave the visitors renewed hope as they searched for an equalizer that would take the match to the limit.
SZOBOSZLAI SEALS THE WIN WITH A STUNNING GOAL
As Tottenham desperately pushed for an equalizer, Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up in stoppage time. In the 90+1st minute, the Hungarian midfielder pounced on a loose ball outside the penalty area and connected with a spectacular volley from approximately 30 yards to make it 3-1.
The strike sealed Liverpool's place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 EFL Cup and eliminated a Tottenham side that once again struggled against Premier League opposition.
The Reds, meanwhile, delivered a decisive response and advanced in the competition after a performance that featured goals, a Tottenham comeback attempt and a spectacular finish.
