Michael Olise starred in Bayern Munich's commanding 6-1 victory over Magdeburg to help the reigning DFB-Pokal holders into the round of 16.
Bayern Munich 6-1 Magdeburg: Olise leads holders into last 16
Ballon d'Or winner Harry Kane remained on the bench for Bayern Munich, but Michael Olise led their charge in the DFB-Pokal without him.
Olise got two goals and an assist – teeing up Ismael Saibari – in the first 50 minutes, before Alphonso Davies, Nathaniel Brown and David Santos Daiber finished off the big win at Allianz Arena.
Bayern had already seen two chances go begging before they got their 10th-minute opener. Josip Stanisic carved open Magdeburg's defence with his throughball to Saibari, who drew Dominik Reimann off his line before teeing up Olise for a tap-in into the empty net.
Just five minutes later, though, Magdeburg were level with a piece of quality from Felipe Chavez. He stood up Jonathan Tah on the left before cutting inside and whipping a wonderful finish into the top-right corner.
Bayern restored their lead six minutes later, with Olise turning provider by sliding it forward for Saibari, who dinked a lovely shot over Reimann.
Magdeburg caused more problems down the left on the stroke of half-time, with Baris Atik cutting inside to hit the near post before Jonas Urbig smothered Chavez's follow-up.
Bayern were on top from the start of the second half; Davies' first involvement was winning a penalty after being tripped by Pierre Nadjombe, and Olise chipped the spot-kick into the net 50 minutes in.
Reimann was called into action to deny Lennart Karl, but Bayern got their fourth in the 70th minute, with Davies bundling over from Karl's tight-angled shot.
Davies then cut inside from the left, wrong-footing his defender along the way, to tee up Brown for a stretching finish four minutes later, but debutant Daiber added late gloss with the last kick of the game, as he arrowed a low finish into the bottom-right corner.
Olise takes up the mantle
Ballon d'Or winner Harry Kane remained on the bench throughout the match, but he was not needed, as Olise stepped up to help Bayern into a comfortable lead.
He has now scored 12 competitive goals for Bayern in all competitions this season – more than any other Bundesliga player.
Olise had the third-most shots in the game (three), and the third-most touches in the opposition box (eight), while only Tom Bischof (50) made more passes in the final third than him (49).
As expected, Bayern blew their second-tier opponents away, having 19 shots worth 3.98 expected goals (xG), with eight of those shots on target, while Magdeburg's nine attempts amounted to just 0.86 xG.
Things could have been so different if Atik had buried his chance on the stroke of half-time instead of hitting the woodwork, but instead, it is Bayern who will progress to the next round as they keep their title defence alive.
