Arminia Bielefeld 2-4 Stuttgart: Millot leads the way in DFB-Pokal triumph
Enzo Millot's brace guided Stuttgart to a historic fourth DFB-Pokal title on Saturday with victory over Arminia Bielefeld in Berlin.
VfB Stuttgart defeated third-tier side Arminia Bielefeld 4-2 to lift the DFB-Pokal on Saturday, with a stunning display from Enzo Millot leading the way at Olympiastadion Berlin.
Nick Woltemade put Stuttgart ahead after 15 minutes, beating goalkeeper Jonas Kersken with a low shot from the edge of the area off Angelo Stiller's set up.
Millot doubled the lead just seven minutes later, finishing promptly from a counter-attack, before Deniz Undav added a third goal in the 28th minute, with Stiller again the provider.
Stuttgart went into the break with a mammoth three-goal lead and Millot found the net once more in the 66th minute to put the contest to bed.
But Arminia Bielefeld fought back with a goal of their own eight minutes from full-time before Josha Vagnoman netted an own goal three minutes later to give them hope of a late fightback, but it was not to be for the underdogs in the end.
This marks Stuttgart's fourth-ever DFB-Pokal title and their first since 1997, where they also defeated a third division team in Energie Cottbus.
Stuttgart, who finished ninth in the Bundesliga this season, have also now earned a place in the next season's Europa League.
Data Debrief: High-flying Stuttgart get the job done
Stuttgart amassed an impressive three-goal lead inside the first 28 minutes on Saturday, with no club having ever scored three goals so early in a DFB Cup final.
Owing to excellent performances from Millot, Stiller and Undav, and some particularly clinical finishing, Stuttgart ended the affair overperforming their expected goals (xG) value of 2.62.
Arminia Bielefeld, though defeated, created plenty of chances of their own at an xG of 2.22 and can hold their heads high following an impressive performance in their first-ever DFB Pokal final.
On their way to Berlin, they defeated four Bundesliga clubs โ Union Berlin, SC Freiburg, Werder Bremen, Bayer Leverkusen. No other team below the second tier had ever managed such a feat in a single season.
