Mason Greenwood Nets Hat-Trick in Scandalous Marseille Rout in the French Cup
A historic night in the French Cup. Led by an unstoppable Mason Greenwood, Olympique de Marseille delivered a jaw-dropping 9-0 thrashing of Bayeux, sending a powerful message in the title race.
Olympique de Marseille left no room for surprises and produced one of the most eye-catching victories of the season, demolishing Bayeux 9-0 in the Round of 32 of the French Cup. Facing a sixth-division opponent for the first time in club history, the side coached by Roberto De Zerbi settled the contest early with ruthless attacking efficiency.
The stage was already set for a wide-open tournament after the shock elimination of Paris Saint-Germain, winners of the last two editions. Still, Bayeux arrived hoping to extend their fairytale run from the regional rounds. That dream, however, quickly collided with the reality of Marseille’s quality and depth.
Greenwood Leads an Attacking Avalanche
From the opening whistle, Marseille pushed forward with the clear intention of deciding the tie as soon as possible. The breakthrough came in the 13th minute when Mason Greenwood slipped a perfectly weighted pass down the right flank to Amir Murillo, whose cross was finished by Angel Gomes arriving late into the box.
From that moment on, the hosts’ resistance crumbled. Hamed Junior Traoré capitalized on a mistake by goalkeeper Oscar Lecanu to make it 2-0, and minutes later Greenwood struck himself, finishing a flowing counterattack with a left-footed drive to extend the lead. Before halftime, Amine Gouiri added a fourth, capping a dominant first half for the visitors.
Hat-Trick and a Statement to the Tournament
After the break, Olympique de Marseille showed no mercy. A defensive lapse allowed Gouiri to square the ball for Greenwood, who calmly tapped in his second goal of the night. Soon after, the roles were reversed as the English forward assisted Gouiri for the sixth.
The only setback for Marseille was the injury to Angel Gomes, who was forced off after opening the scoring. Even so, the closing stages were emphatic. CJ Egan-Riley headed in the seventh from a corner delivered by Greenwood, Neal Maupay ended his goal drought with the eighth, and Mason Greenwood completed his hat-trick to seal an extraordinary 9-0 victory.
With this emphatic performance, Marseille march confidently into the Round of 16 and send a clear warning to the rest of the field. Their next challenge will come at home against Rennes on February 4, in a matchup that now carries even greater expectations.
