Albacete Apologize to Real Madrid and Vinicius After Copa Del Rey Night
A historic Copa del Rey upset was overshadowed by disgraceful scenes. Albacete issued a public apology to Real Madrid and Vinicius Jr after racist abuse marred the night.
A Historic Upset Clouded by Shame
What should have been remembered purely as one of the great nights in Copa del Rey history instead ended in deep embarrassment. Albacete pulled off a stunning 3–2 victory over Real Madrid, knocking the European giants out of the competition, but the result was eclipsed by racist abuse directed at Vinicius Jr.
A banana was thrown toward the Brazilian forward during the celebrations, while xenophobic chants were reported outside the Carlos Belmonte stadium in the hours leading up to kick-off.
Albacete’s Public Apology
In a strongly worded statement released after the match, Albacete expressed regret and condemnation of the incidents, describing the images as “painful and shameful.”
“It is deeply distressing that such disgraceful and reprehensible acts of racism tarnished what should have been a magical night,” the club said, acknowledging both the object thrown onto the pitch and the chants heard outside the stadium.
The second-division side stressed that these actions do not represent the values of the club or the vast majority of its supporters.
Zero Tolerance and Lifetime Bans
Albacete confirmed they have launched an internal investigation to identify those responsible, working in coordination with local authorities. The club stated it will apply the strongest possible disciplinary measures.
“We are committed to ensuring that those responsible never set foot in the Carlos Belmonte again,” the statement added, reinforcing a zero-tolerance stance that aligns with the tougher anti-racism policies promoted across Spanish football.
Support for Vinicius and Real Madrid
The club also made a point of separating the actions of a small minority from the rest of the fanbase, who created an intense and memorable atmosphere for the cup tie.
“On behalf of our exemplary supporters, Albacete wishes to show its full support for Vinicius Jr, Real Madrid, and their fans in the face of such despicable behavior,” the statement concluded.
A Recurring Problem in Spanish Football
Sadly, the incident is far from isolated for Vinicius Jr, who has endured repeated racist abuse across Spanish stadiums in recent years. The ongoing persecution has previously taken a visible emotional toll on the winger, who has spoken openly about the impact it has had on his career.
The magic of the Copa del Rey once again collided with the harsh reality of racism in football. Albacete’s response was swift and firm, but the incident serves as another reminder that strong statements must be matched by lasting cultural change—on and off the pitch.
